Tom Moyane (born 31 January 1953 in Soweto) is a development economist. A notable position he held was as the former commissioner of SARS.

He has also served under several other positions through which he contributed to its development.

During the South African apartheid, he was in exile. Even when he was outside the shores of South Africa, he contributed and served under several capacities in other countries.

Background

The economist was born Tom Moyane in Soweto, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa on 31 January 1953. He built a strong foundation in his academic pursuit. He proceeded to enroll at the Eduardo Mondlane University, Mozambique.

After completing the scheduled years of study, he graduated from the institution with a BSc in Economics. The qualifications his educational background earned him have several job opportunities.

He has worked with the Department of Correctional Services. During his days there, he served under the capacity of National Commissioner.

Tom has also occupied the position of Chief Executive Officer at the Government Printing Works.

Career

He served under the capacity of the SARS commissioner under Jacob Zuma’s administration. Tom was appointed to the position in September 2014.

Many people poured out their view on the appointment saying that it was based on favoritism. They pointed out that Tom was “Zuma’s Man”.

His leadership saw the South African Revenue Service (SARS) deteriorate too much. Tom received a suspension from President Cyril Ramaphosa on 19 March 2018.

He was a victim of criticism following a controversial investigation that led to the dismissal of 55 senior workers.

Since he refused to step down from the position, suspension from the position by the president followed.

In November 2018, Cyril fired Tom from the position. Robert Nugent advised the president to take the action.

Though, Tom did not want to leave the position so easily. He started several court battles backed by his lawyers.

Wife

Tom Moyane is married to Zola, and together they parent a son Hlekani.

Tom and his wife are grandparents, their son has a child with his partner. Though reports alleged that Tom and his wife abused the mother of their son’s child. The girl’s mother says that her daughter faced emotional abuse at the hands of Moyane and his wife.

Salary

In the year 2017/2018, Tom was on the list of public officials who received more salary than the president himself. He earned a salary of R4.3m before being suspended from the position.
